چکیده
Friction originates at the area of real contact which depends on (changing) surface topography. Observing and measuring multi-asperity interfaces is difficult, making it challenging to quantitatively study interplay between frictional force In this paper, we systematically manipulate topography use a fluorescence microscopy-based visualization technique reveal interplay. We demonstrate good agreement elastoplastic boundary element method calculations experimental contact. While thus pressure could be varied by factor 4 through control topography, had only modest effect coefficient friction (CoF). do find small but systematic increase in proportionality constant normal (CoF) with decreasing roughness. The observation that smoother surfaces have greater CoF due capillary adhesion two surfaces. model behavior using simple without adjustable parameters. Our results provide quantitative insights into mechanics, friction, adhesion. A predictive understanding essential demanding applications such as precision positioning.

Static and dry friction due to multiscale surface roughness.
It is shown on the basis of scaling arguments that a disordered interface between two elastic solids will quite generally exhibit static and dry friction (i.e., kinetic friction which does not vanish as the sliding velocity approaches zero) because of Tomlinson-model instabilities that occur for small-length-scale asperities. This provides a possible explanation for why static and dry friction ...

15 صفحه اولOn the nature of surface roughness with application to contact mechanics, sealing, rubber friction and adhesion.
Surface roughness has a huge impact on many important phenomena. The most important property of rough surfaces is the surface roughness power spectrum C(q). We present surface roughness power spectra of many surfaces of practical importance, obtained from the surface height profile measured using optical methods and the atomic force microscope. We show how the power spectrum determines the cont...
متن کاملEffect of surface roughness on steel-steel dry friction coefficient
The influence of surface roughness magnitude and direction on dry static friction coefficient between two similar steel samples has been studied through an experiment. A testing apparatus has been designed and fabricated to measure the friction coefficient for a few forms of surface asperity. According to the results of the experiments, dry friction coefficient is affected by both magnitude and...
متن کاملSurface roughness and dry friction.
Persson's multiscale contact mechanics theory combined with a multiscale Brillouin-Prandtl-Tomlinson model is used to show that on the basis of these models "dry friction" [i.e., kinetic friction that remains at exceedingly small velocities (but still above the creep range) close to its value at higher velocities] should almost always occur for self-affine surfaces when the dominant interaction...
